In 2018, our founder stood in their garage looking at piles of perfectly good items — designer clothes with tags still on, barely used kitchen gadgets, furniture in excellent condition — all destined for the landfill. That moment sparked something powerful: a desire to create a better way.
Every day in Orange County and across America, thousands of high-quality items — clothing, electronics, home goods, and more — are thrown away simply because their owners no longer need them. Many of these items are in near-perfect or even brand-new condition. At the same time, families struggle to afford quality goods, students need school supplies, and people want to live more sustainably.
Our founder realized there was a massive gap between what people were discarding and what others desperately needed. The solution wasn’t complicated — it was about creating a bridge.

Our founder grew up in a household that valued resourcefulness. Nothing was wasted. Old clothes became cleaning rags, broken toys were repaired, and furniture was passed down through generations. When they moved to Orange County, they were shocked by the sheer volume of waste they saw — not just from their own household, but from neighbors, friends, and the community at large.
One day, while helping a friend clean out their garage, they found several high-end items still in original packaging: a KitchenAid mixer, designer handbags, and brand-new children’s clothing. These items were headed to the trash because "we just don’t use them anymore."
That experience became the catalyst. Why should perfectly good items end up in landfills when so many people could benefit from them? This realization led to the birth of Shasta Stash — a thrift store built on the belief that one person’s “no longer needed” can be another person’s treasure.
